Scoop Up our Week 20 Lessons about Vaccines plus Shoveling Snow

The objective for our Week 20 lessons is to teach critical reading and thinking skills using current news about “Are COVID-19 vaccines safe and effective?” (Level 1 lesson) and “How to prevent injuries when shoveling snow and walking on ice” (Level 2 lesson).

Some of the exercises of this week’s Level 1 lesson include:

  • Vocabulary Synonyms: Using a thesaurus, find at least one related word for three of the words about vaccines.
  • Characterization: List three words or phrases that characterize COVID-19 vaccines. Cite evidence in the article that supports your answer.
  • “Drawing Conclusions Making Inferences”: What is the earliest age at which someone can receive a COVID-19 vaccine? Explain.

Some of the exercises of this week’s Level 2 lesson include:

  • Vocabulary Multimeaning Words: This lesson’s article contains several multimeaning words. Define/explain the following words as they are used in the article: slick (para. 1); strain (para. 4); lift (para. 9). Next, write one unrelated definition for each of these words.
  • Adequacy of Data: What evidence in the article supports the claim that you do not need to rush when you are doing something like shoveling snow?
  • “Drawing Conclusions Making Inferences”: Why should you take breaks and keep hydrated while working outside in the cold? Explain.
